The Day United Airlines Made Me Feel Like a Legend (and a Fossil)

When I booked a recent United flight, the app refused to take my MileagePlus number. At the airport, the gate agent handed me a number to call - she could not get it to work either.
On the phone line, the rep gasped and said, "I've never seen a MileagePlus number this old." She put me on speakerphone. the entire call center applauded. The manager jumped on and said, "We can't thank you enough. We've never seen one this old. Your number is one of the first ever given out."
I laughed and said, "Well, I'm not that old." He replied, "Ma'am, your number has been active for nearly 44 years."
So, apparently, my parents must've signed me up when I was ten. And somewhere between feeling special and slightly fossilized...I realized - longevity has its perks.
