Position Overview
The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for developing and
executing Louisiana Wildlife Federation's overall communications strategy to advance the organization's
mission, strengthen its public profile, and support its legislative, policy, and conservation priorities. This
individual will serve as LWF's senior communications strategist, partnering closely with the Executive
Director to develop messaging on complex conservation and public policy issues, identify strategic
communications opportunities, manage emerging issues, and ensure the organization's voice is clear,
credible, and consistent across all audiences.
This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role for an accomplished communications professional who
can quickly understand complex issues, exercise sound judgment, and hit the ground running with
minimal direction. The ideal candidate combines strategic thinking with a willingness to roll up their
sleeves and execute. They will be equally comfortable advising organizational leadership on
communications strategy as they are writing a press release, responding to media inquiries, developing
messaging around complex issues, or leading a public awareness campaign.
Key Responsibilities
• Strategic Communications Leadership: Develop and lead LWF's comprehensive
communications strategy to support organizational priorities, advocacy initiatives, fundraising
efforts, membership engagement, and public awareness.
• Executive Communications & Strategic Messaging: Serve as a strategic communications
advisor to the Executive Director by developing messaging, talking points, speeches, opinion
pieces, presentations, and media strategies on complex conservation, environmental, and public
policy issues.
• Issues & Reputation Management: Monitor emerging issues affecting Louisiana's wildlife,
natural resources, and legislative priorities. Anticipate communications challenges and
opportunities, develop proactive messaging strategies, and help manage sensitive or high profile communications situations.
• Project Management: Lead and manage communications projects from concept to execution,
including campaigns, educational materials, newsletters, social media initiatives, and media
outreach efforts. Coordinate the work of contractors, interns, and volunteers to achieve project
and programmatic goals.
• Content Strategy: Oversee the development of compelling, mission-driven content across
digital, print, video, social media, and traditional communications channels, ensuring consistency
of message and brand.
• Campaign Leadership: Lead integrated communications campaigns supporting legislative
priorities, conservation initiatives, membership growth, fundraising, and public education
efforts.
• Media Relations: Cultivate relationships with reporters, editorial boards, broadcasters, digital
media outlets, and influencers throughout Louisiana while proactively generating earned media
opportunities.
• Visual and Audio Media: Ensure high-quality visual storytelling through photography, video, and
multimedia content, coordinating internal and external creative resources as needed.
• Stakeholder Communications: Work closely with the board, staff, government agencies,
contractors, partner organizations, coalitions, and volunteers to ensure consistent and effective
messaging across all audiences and programs.
• Communications Analytics: Measure the effectiveness of communications initiatives using
audience engagement, media coverage, digital analytics, and other performance metrics to
continually refine strategy.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field; public
policy, political science, or English are also helpful.
• 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, public relations,
journalism, public affairs, or related field.
• Demonstrated success developing and executing organization-wide communications strategies.
• Experience advising senior executives on communications strategy and messaging.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills with experience preparing speeches, Op-Eds, press
releases, policy messaging, and executive communications.
• Proven experience managing media relations and securing earned media coverage.
• Experience communicating complex issues to diverse audiences.
• Strong project management and organizational skills.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
*Preferred:
• Experience with conservation, environmental policy, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or
public policy.
• Experience working with nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, trade associations, or
government affairs.
• Familiarity with Louisiana's legislative process and key conservation issues is highly desirable.
Location and Travel Requirements
• The LWF office is in Baton Rouge.
• A Hybrid work arrangement may be available, determined in consultation with the Executive
Director.
• Attendance at various meetings, legislative sessions, and other events is required, which
may occur in different cities and outside of regular work hours.
Salary and Benefits
• $82,000–$92,000 per year
• Health, dental, and vision insurance (employer pays 80%, employee pays 20%))
• IRA plan contribution after one year
• Paid holidays, sick days, and vacation
• Short-term and Long-Term Disability provided (employer pays 100%)
• A work laptop and cell phone reimbursement are provided.
