Director of Finance & Accounting
$165-$180K
Plus Relocation

We have been retained by a special water district in South Denver to recruit a Director of Finance & Accounting—a senior leadership role with real impact on the community and the future of sustainable water infrastructure.

This district was formed to deliver renewable water resources and centralized wastewater services, and it is actively building an integrated system designed for both short- and long-term efficiency through thoughtful planning and smart use of technology. This is an opportunity to step into a highly visible role and help shape the financial foundation of a growing, mission-driven organization.

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Finance & Accounting will be a key member of the senior management team, partnering with internal leaders, external stakeholders, and a diverse Board of Directors made up of elected and appointed members from operations, engineering, and customer service backgrounds.

This role requires someone who can balance technical rigor with diplomacy—someone comfortable navigating strong personalities, knowing when to push back, and understanding how to work the system to get things done.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cash management and overall financial operations
  • Accounting oversight and financial statement preparation
  • Budget development and ongoing financial planning
  • Short- and long-term financial forecasting
  • Capital asset planning and debt management (including bonds)
  • Audit coordination and financial compliance
  • Rate studies and financial modeling
  • Board and financial committee reporting and presentations

What They’re Looking For

  • A strong foundation in finance, accounting, and business operations
  • Ability to analyze financial trends and translate them into actionable insights
  • Experience working with Boards and senior leadership teams
  • Comfort operating in a public-facing or regulated environment
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills; current systems include QuickBooks
  • MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred
  • Background in a special district, public utility, water, sanitation, or liquid utilities environment is highly desirable

Culture & Work Environment

This is a hard-working but genuinely fun group. People here care deeply about what they do, enjoy working together, and take pride in serving their community. This is an in-office position, ideal for someone who values collaboration and presence.

Compensation, Benefits & Relocation

  • Salary: $165,000–$180,000 (no bonus structure due to strong base)
  • Relocation assistance available, including a relocation package for qualified candidates
  • 401(a) with 7% employer match
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision for the entire family (no high deductible)
  • Phone stipend
  • Mileage reimbursement

If you are a senior finance leader who enjoys complexity, values public service, and wants to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, this is a standout opportunity.

If this role feels aligned—or you know someone exceptional who should hear about it—I’d love to connect.

Warmly,
